Assistant General Secretary
A strategic and visionary leader, Kavan Gayle has been at the helm of the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union, Jamaica’s largest and most prominent Trade Union, since November of 2007. His primary areas of focus include conceptualizing and implementing the strategic direction of the Union while providing the highest level of representation to workers within Jamaica’s Financial Sector organizations. Commencing his Trade Union career in 1986 when he joined the BITU, his growth and development in the movement rapidly took him through many positions; from Research Officer to Senior Negotiating Officer, then Assistant Island Supervisor, which preceded his appointment as Assistant General Secretary.
His vocation also includes working with the Global Union affiliate Union Network International both regionally and internationally where he presently serves as an executive member of the Regional Committee of the Americas and a member of its Regional Management Committee.
Senator Gayle is currently a member of several Administrative Boards, including the Jamaica Productivity Centre, Labour Advisory Committee, Labour Reform Commission and is an executive to the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions.
Senator Gayle pursued Labour studies at the Free Labour and Development and Cooperative Studies, (Israel), George Meany Labour College, Maryland, USA and in several other countries. He was appointed to the Senate in February of 2012.
Sen. Gayle currently sits on the following Boards: National Housing Trust, National Insurance Fund, Sugar Industry Authority, Apprenticeship Board, Overseas Examination Commission
Repatriation Commission and Labour Reform Commission.
